Civic Engagement
The MMY Civic Engagement Group helps community members learn how government and elections work, in English and Arabic.
The MMY Civic Engagement Group is a nonpartisan community initiative of Murfreesboro Muslim Youth, based at the MMY Center in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. We help community members understand how government works, how elections run, and how everyday people can make their voices heard.
Many people in our community are new to the American political system. Some are recently naturalized citizens, some are voting for the first time, and some have lived here for years but never felt sure where to start. Whatever your background, this group is for you. No prior experience is needed.
What we do
Our mission is to build political knowledge and practical civic skills among community members, especially those new to civic participation, and to develop participants into informed, confident community leaders. When people understand how decisions are made at the city, county, state, and federal levels, they can take part in those decisions and help shape the place they call home.
Learn. We explain the basics in plain language: the four levels of government, who represents our city and county, what each elected office does, and how elections work.
Connect. We bring community members together to share questions and experiences, and link them to local officials, civic organizations, and trusted official resources like the Tennessee Secretary of State and GoVoteTN.com.
Participate. We help people check their eligibility, register to vote, understand voter ID requirements, and make a personal voting plan, and we encourage involvement beyond voting, such as attending local government meetings.
Lead. Participants are encouraged to grow into leaders by helping register others, facilitating discussions, mentoring newcomers, and representing the community in local civic spaces.
Strictly nonpartisan. We do not endorse candidates or political parties, and we never tell anyone how to vote. Candidates in our materials are listed alphabetically without party labels, and ballot measures are presented with both sides explained fairly.
English and Arabic. We produce our materials in both languages, giving each equal care so no one is left out of the conversation.

Our youth voted together, and MMY provided a panel on youth civic engagement at the MTSU Honors College.

Is the MMY Civic Engagement Group partisan?
No. We are strictly nonpartisan. We do not endorse candidates or parties and never tell anyone how to vote.
Do I need any experience to join?
No. The group is for everyone, including new citizens, first-time voters, young people, and parents. No prior experience is needed.
Are materials available in Arabic?
Yes. We produce our materials in both English and Arabic.
